Gay rolemodels on tv

Last night, I watched an hour of horrible, stereotypical gay roles on tv. Amazingly enough, it was on Fox. That disappointed me. Usually I hope Fox to be a little better about this--- especially since a few years ago, they tried a gay-themed tv show with John Goodman (quite funny, I thought... but it was cancelled). Anyway... the shows:

  • King of the Hill: Bill pretends to be gay in order to get customers his haircutting team with Louanne. He, of course, was a stereotypical gay--- along with the other (real) gay male there. It was a little disappointment no lesson was really learned about this. I mean, he feels bad for pretending to be gay--- but I think that's just because he looses his job when he comes out as being straight.

  • Oliver Beene: One of Oliver's friends, Michael, is a stereotypical homosexual--- as a child. It kind of gets on my nerves. His role was actually useful, as he helps to "straighten" out Ted--- who wants to impress a girl and needs style.

Now, it's not that I mind this stuff... because I do. It just kind of got me a little annoyed at the fact there is hardly any good gay representation on tv. The best gay representation so far has been Carter from Spin City, in my opinion. Errr... I think that was his name. I think John Goodman's tv show a few years ago could have been great, too.

    Homophobia and this weekend

Most of my friends are not homophobic, and on several accounts have come right out and said they have no problem with gay people. I usually feel very happy about this, naturally... but then one of them might say something generally homophobic in nature, or at least sounding that way. Perhaps they really don't have a problem with gay people, but because society allows for at least some homophobia, they too become somewhat homophobic.

  • Story #1

Thursday night, after watching an 18.5 hour marathon of the X-Files 6th season, I decided to hang out with my drunk friends. I didn't drink that night, just for the sake of keeping up my trend of sobriety. As things started to mellow out in my dorm, I decided to hang out with Joe, who hadn't yet begun drinking because he couldn't find anyone to drink with. {I still didn't drink, but someone else came along so he'd have a drinking partner}.

It started out like a good evening... playing dominoes and those two getting drunk (even though Nick--- the other guy, obviously) was already drunk to begin with). Joe happened to mention that his roommate is gay, or bi, or curious... or something of that nature. He happened to find a few floppy disks with some good ol' fashioned guy-on-guy porn. I know who is roommate is... pretty cute... and I did have my suspicions from when I first saw him... so, yay, I guess. Well, that brought up the subject of homosexuality. Joe told me the usual stuff--- he has no problem with people being gay... yadda yadda yadda... Nick asked what it's like being gay, and I told him it's no different from being straight {nice fun discussion for later, though). I would ordinarily think this is a question of Nick's curiousness... but I somehow think it was more of an opening of an eye... realizing there's something different out there. In that sense, he was curious, but perhaps not of his sexuality. I could easily be wrong, but that's my percecption. So they were both cool... and they even proposed a toast to homosexuality or something of that sort (2nd time that's happened--- first time was with John, who proposed a toast to me being openly gay).

Later that night, as Joe was getting high, someone else came into the room. Those two had been talking about roommates. This is when Joe started being homophobic. He basically started implying that having a gay roommate was a bad thing. I mean, he didn't say that exactly... but from his tone, I kind of got that impression. It almost seemed to make the fact that earlier in the evening, Nick and Joe proposed a toast to homosexuality. After a little while past, I just decided to leave... I had already been up for 24 hours, so I thought sleep would be good. I haven't talked to Joe about his comments yet.

  • Story #2

This second story is slightly different from the first story on the account that the guy being homophobic hadn't originally said anything about him being gay friendly. Brian (Bryan?) lives in my dorm, and I've had relatively little involvement with him, save for times we just happened to be hanging out with the same crowd. Still, we barely have much contact with one another, and he's a relatively new face/person I have come to know.

When I went down to hang out with some of my drunk friends, he had already been drinking [perhaps he was high, too... he does like to do both, I have no doubts of]. That night, although he didn't necessarily say anything homophobic, he was just being a major pain. He was very annoying by saying, "Oh, but Frodo might" (Frodo being my nick name here) every 15 minutes or so. For example, John had two little name pins on him--- roughly in the spots where his nipples would be, and made a comment about having names for his nipples, and perhaps a few other additional comments. Brian then said, "Frodo would like that." It got rather annoying, and rather old. I'm not sure if it was just that he was drunk {possibly droned}, and therefore very repetative in his speech, or if he was trying to pick on me... or both. And if he was trying to pick on me {which occassionally he'll do}, there could be a few reasons: 1) He's just trying to be funny 2) He's [slightly] homophobic 3) He could just be a closet-case... there is a tendancy to pick on those who are [openly] gay, as a way to deny a person's own homosexuality... or so I've heard. When I told John about how Brian was being annoying, John mostly just vouched for him being homophobic. I'm just not so sure about that...

Anyway, that was Thursday night, after 18.5 hours of the X-Files for THanksgiving. I might be buying the 7th season today... another marathon? Oooo... fun. But only a possibility. Very theoritical stuff.

    National Coming Out Day

Happy National Coming Out Day, everyone. I hope everyone's went well. My day:

11:00 Woke up, had to wait for the bathroom the finish being cleaned, and got breakfast.

11:15 Noticed "Revenge of the Nerds" was on tv, watched the part where it's said that all jocks think about is sports, and all nerds think about is sex. I made some comment to Brendon (who's on duty, yay!), and he said, "It's true"... and then I went to breakfast.

12 Walked past Brendon, since I had just finished breakfast.

1:30Walked outside a few minutes, walked back in... talked to Brendon... wished him a happy National Coming Out Day. His reaction? "COming Out Day? Is that today? Cool," and he just kind of nodded his head.... and I walked off.

2:00 I'm writing the first part of this entry [to be publically displayed tonight]

2:30 Walked to Fred Meyer's to buy cookies

5:00 Ate supper with the local gay group on campus

7:00 Started watching "10 Things I Hate About You"

8:15 Wanted to watch Queer As Folk (QAF), but I couldn't get a hold of the group who was watching it, so I finished watching "10 Things I Hate About You"

9:00 Watched "Lonestar State of Mind." The thought of watching a Texas-themed movie wasn't appealing at first... but it was actually very good. It even had an openly gay guy in it :-)

10:40 Writing the second part of this entry, still yet to be publicized.

I've gotten asked these a lot.. well, okay... kind of... bah.

    1) I might tell my roommate I'm gay, but not until I'm up there and he's gotten to know me.

    2) My boyfriend and I... well.. neither of us is sure, really. LoL I guess the best way to say it is that we're going to keep an open relationship.. I think.. errr.. like I said, I'm not sure, he's not sure.... we're just going to find out when it happens, I guess.
